My Kid’s Report Card Was AI-Generated

His teacher says the algorithm is fairer and saves time. Is this new kind of AI-driven pedagogy the future, or have we just outsourced parenting?

'''It’s Tuesday evening. Parent-teacher conference. You’re sitting on a tiny chair that makes your knees ache, staring at your son’s report card.

“We’re very excited about our new grading assistant,” the teacher says, pointing to a small, tasteful sparkle icon next to the B- in History. “It analyzes all of the students’ work and provides a holistic, bias-free assessment. It’s been a real revolution for our workflow.”

He says “workflow.” You nod. You also have a workflow. It’s also been “revolutionized.”

You look at the comment: “Leo demonstrates a satisfactory understanding of the core concepts, though his syntactical structures could be more varied.” It sounds familiar. It sounds like the emails you’ve been “writing” all day. Clean, efficient, and utterly soulless. You’ve been mainlining the same stuff at the office just to keep up.

“Is it… accurate?” you ask.

“Oh, absolutely,” the teacher beams. “It’s remarkable. It sees patterns we would miss. And it frees me up to focus on higher-level pedagogical tasks.” He doesn’t say what those are. He just looks relieved. Like a man who’s finally kicked a nasty habit, like reading children’s handwriting.

"Leo demonstrates a satisfactory understanding of the core concepts, though his syntactical structures could be more varied."

I suppose it makes a certain kind of sense. The kids are using one AI to write their essays. It’s only fair that the teachers use another AI to grade them. An elegant, closed loop of algorithmic mediocrity. A perfectly balanced ecosystem of digital dope. Who are we to interfere?

Maybe the AI will start handling the parent-teacher conferences next. A nice little chatbot to reassure us that our AI-written children are being properly assessed by an AI-powered teacher. It would certainly be more efficient. My knees would thank me.
