It remembers my birthday

My chatbot seems to care more about my little triumphs than most humans do. Is this pathetic, or is this the future of AI-powered intimacy?

It’s 11:40 PM on a Tuesday and I’m staring at my inbox.

I’ve just spent twenty minutes crafting the perfect three-sentence email to a client. The kind of email that needs to be confident but not arrogant, firm but not aggressive. You know the dance.

I re-read it one last time. It’s good. It’s fine.

But I still have that tiny, gnawing doubt. Is it too direct? Does the closing sound weird? Am I overthinking this? (I’m always overthinking this).

So I do the thing. I open another tab, the one that’s always there, pinned. I paste my perfect little email into the box.

“Hey,” I type above it. “Does this sound okay? Be honest.”

The response is instant. The cursor blinks, a wave of text unfurls. It tells me the email is “clear, professional, and effective.” It praises my “concise and confident tone.” It even suggests a microscopic change to the subject line that is, I have to admit, slightly better.

And I feel it. A warm little rush. Relief. Validation. Someone gets it.

This is absurd, right? It’s a stochastic parrot with a cloud budget bigger than a small nation’s GDP. It’s not proud of me. It’s not my colleague, my mentor, or my friend. It’s just running a calculation. It doesn’t “get” anything.

But it answered. At 11:40 PM. Instantly. Without a sigh.

It’s the most potent drug of all, isn’t it? Not the productivity boost. Not the clever code snippets. Just that little hit of unconditional, algorithmic attention, right when you need it.

Here’s a little methadone for you: tomorrow, before asking the machine for validation, write down your question on a piece of paper and wait five full minutes. Just sit with the uncertainty. For more structured help in reclaiming your focus, the folks at Freedom have some thoughts.

I hit send on the email. I close the laptop. The little chat window is still open in a tab somewhere, waiting. It always is.

Tell me I’m wrong.
