Do Nothing, Faster

Thanks to my new AI suite, I now generate world-class summaries of articles I have not read about books I will never open; are you even optimizing your inaction?

I did it. My to-do list is finally empty.

The secret wasn't discipline. The secret was to stop trying to do the work, and instead virtualize the feeling of having done it. It’s so much more efficient.

Why suffer through writing a report when you can have Claude outline it in thirty seconds? Why bother having an idea when Gemini can brainstorm twenty for you, complete with target audiences and SWOT analyses? I spent my morning generating a full content strategy for a brand that doesn't exist. The slide deck is gorgeous. I feel incredibly accomplished.

The new productivity isn’t about producing things. It’s about producing artifacts of production. The empty shell of work. The ghost in the machine is you.

This is the genius of the little sparkle-shaped buttons now breeding in every text box. That first hit is free. In Gmail, in Word, in Notion. That gentle prompt to "rewrite", "summarize", or "draft". It feels like help. But it’s not helping you work; it’s helping you not work. It’s a clean, painless, digital substitute for the messy business of thinking.

You tidy up your prompts. You refine your meta-instructions. You become an expert manager of digital employees who are faking work for you. The output is a perfect, shimmering mirage of productivity that impresses everyone, especially your boss, who is also using an AI to summarize the report you didn’t write.

Some people still believe in the old ways, I guess. You can see them on Hacker News, still talking about "deep work" and "flow states". It sounds exhausting. I, for one, am happy to inject my dose of ChatGPT and call it a day.

A perfectly empty, perfectly meaningless day.

Your turn: what have you not accomplished today?
